5 Tips to Keep You Organized and Focused at Work

When it comes down to it, there’s no bigger productivity killer than disorganization. Keeping yourself, your workspace and your time organized is essential in staying productive and focused on the task at hand. The last thing you want is to come to a screeching halt because you can’t find that Word document or you find yourself lost in a field of tabs and folders. Take the time to read these few simple tips and try to incorporate them into your day.

1. Plan your day.

At the end of your work day or even just before it begins, plan out your day by writing down all the tasks and objectives you would like to meet. This will help you stay focused on the goals you have by seeing them in front of you.

2. Take it one step at a time.

Use your task list responsibly, don’t try to take on more than one task at a time. Give one task your complete focus before moving on to the next to avoid distraction or being disorganized.

3. Approach your day in the way that works best for you.

Everyone works differently. Perhaps take on your task list from most difficult to least, knocking the hard stuff out first? Maybe you could take it on in order of importance or due date? Do whatever you think is necessary to keep you focused and on task.

4. Take small breaks between tasks.

After finishing a task, take a small break to compose yourself. Jumping from one project immediately to the next can be mentally exhausting. See our Pro-Tip on “The Power of Meditation and Mindfulness at Work”.

5. Organize your computer.

Keep your workspace and (in this modern age) your digital workspace clean and organized. Utilize folders, bookmarks and shortcuts to keep yourself from getting lost looking for important files or websites.
